We’ve traveled through Easter. We’ve celebrated the death and resurrection of Jesus. So what does it all mean? That’s what this series on Colossians will answer. How does what Jesus did affect our lives now?
Colossae was a great city, but by the time the gospel got there it was a cosmopolitan town of lesser importance. Odds are, while Paul was ministering in Ephesus (see Acts 19), an covert (Epaphras) started a church in that town.
Later, almost a decade after the church was planted, Epaphras went to visit Paul with some news: the Colossians are trading in their Christian freedom for something that will enslave them. Paul wrote this mature encouraging letter to help keep this community on the straight-and-narrow.
In this first message we looked at some of the characteristics of the family of God:
- All families have their problems.
- Families pray for each other.
- Families share a common bond.
(Note: At the start of this message I put together a timeline of when the church was planted, when the problem arose, and where Paul was imprisoned when he wrote the letter. I’m aware that these details are up for debate. For example, Paul could have written this while imprisoned in Ephesus, not Rome, which would change the date that the letter was written. I reviewed the evidence and went with the most likely scenario.)
