Ecclesiastes 11:1 has attained universal fame as a proverb. People who know nothing about the Bible have likely heard this expression before (NRSV):
Send out your bread upon the waters,
for after many days you will get it back.
Since it’s so popular, it’s been abused in a number of ways. It’s been used to encourage us to give our bread to the hungry. It’s also been used to make us send our hard-earned cash to TV evangelists. Both of these (mis)uses miss the mark.
In this message, we look at the true meaning of Ecclesiastes 1:1-6 and considered how we can invest ourselves into the work of the Kingdom.
