The Position is Taken

There’s a brilliant line in the movie, “Little Boy and Fat Man”:

You’ve got to stop playing God, because you’re not good at it and the position is taken!

Yet that’s the perennial temptation: to be like God. That’s how Eve was tempted, and it’s what we still crave today: to be the centre of our world—to be gods.

The preacher of Ecclesiastes reminds us of God’s transcendence. It’s a message our Jesus-and-me Western-style Christianity needs to be reminded of frequently.
