Did you ever wonder why Mary Magdalene mistook Jesus for a gardener? This little detail is more than a simple narrative device used to explain to us that Mary didn’t recognize Jesus at first glance. John’s making a very important point here that falls in line with his gospel’s whole agenda: Jesus is the firstfruits of New Creation. He’s the Adam that obeyed. Jesus is the perfect gardener à la Genesis 2:15.
This leaves us with an incredible example to follow into the newly re-created world.
