New Beginnings

MicrophoneWow. You go fishing for one Sunday, and look what you miss! Pastor Wendy spoke on the Exodus of Israel from Egypt, and how that event should inform our lives today. The call for us to move beyond our ties to slavery and to live out our potential is excellent (and not just because of the shameless flattery, either. I know my face has an angelic glow to it, but c’mon—Moses?). Click on the title to listen:

New Beginnings

Technical note: the audio drops out a bit at the beginning—please be patient. About five minutes in we switched the batteries in the mic and the audio becomes clear.

What a timely sermon. Church conflict is as old as time itself. It takes love, courage, love, prayer, love, compassion, love, understanding, love, openness, love to deal with conflict.
I liken it to a balloon that you want to see fly high in the air but all it is doing is sitting on the ground because it is full of oxygen, not helium. In order to replace the stuff that is keeping it down you could prick the balloon but then it would burst and you would be left with a broken balloon, unable to be filled ever again. Or you could let the air out slowly, gently. Then when it is fully deflated you fill it with the stuff that will make it fly.
When we hold our conflicts and don’t deal with them we are like that fully inflated balloon that can’t fly. We can be batted around any which way because we are so full of the stuff that won’t make us fly. When we deal with the conflict in the wrong way we “prick” the balloon and become so broken we can’t get it back together.
It is when we deal with the stuff correctly, in a right manner that we are left whole, ready to be filled again.
