How to Hide an Elephant

Posted February 23, 2009 – 5:00 pm in: Messages

ecclesiastesWelcome to our new series of meaningless messages. Read a bit of Ecclesiastes in the NIV translation, and you’ll see what I’m getting at. We began the series with a look at Ecclesiastes’ main themes, along with how our culture does its best to avoid what the author portrays in such stark light. Click on the title to listen:

How to Hide an Elephant

I should mention that the metaphor of hiding an elephant came from Peter Kreeft (his website has quite a bit of good teaching on it). I’ll be posting a list of all my Ecclesiastes resources shortly so you’ll know where I’m coming from. There no way I could have invented this stuff myself!

What do you think? Is Ecclesiastes important today? How does it resonate with you?

I think as Christians if we were to be honest with ourselves to others, i think that we would find that we would sound at various times in our lives, like the writer of Ecclesiastes in his despair. David in a number of the Psalms speaks of the despair that he feels (Psalm 10,13,22,30,31,35…) In the words of Jesus “he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.” It does not mean that we stay in that place of despair or that we do not have a God that hears our cry.
Also we can look at the book of Ecclesiastes in its parts and not get the meaning the writer is intending to say in its whole.

13Everything you were taught can be put into a few words:

    Respect and obey God!

This is what life is all about.

14God will judge everything we do,

even what is done in secret,

    whether good or bad.
